I was able to meet up with my friend and his boyfriend yesterday afternoon. Turns out the whole choir they were travelling with was staying at a hotel about five minutes' drive from my house, though it was half an hour away from the theater where they were to sing. We got caught up on life since leaving school during the 45 minutes or so before they had to get ready for the performance. I made it to the performance but didn't get a chance to talk afterward.

The concert was great. I really enjoyed it, although there was one song full of inside gay jokes that pretty much went over my head. But my seat brought reminded me about some disadvantages of being short. I am just barely over five feet tall. I had to lean a little to one side to see past the head of the man in front of me, and my heels didn't quite touch the floor. This is not surprising. But what people of average+ height might not think about is that the depth of the seat was also inappropriate: the length of my femurs is such that when my knees were at the edge of the seat, my back was still a few inches away from the back of the seat, so that to lean backwards I had to slump and curve my lower back. I needed a toss pillow. :)

I have this problem with a lot of chairs. Recently I read an article in Time magazine about how various products are being made in bigger sizes to accomodate the increasing bulk of many Americans. I guess it won't be getting any easier to find furniture sized to fit me. On the plus side, I can duck under branches pretty easily, and if I slouch I can stand under some airplane overhead bins.
