The gathering

I'll be heading over to my aunt & uncle's house in a couple hours for Thanksgiving. Every year they have family and good friends over for the holiday. And I'm talking about the whole families. This will include my three cousins, their significant others, and now three grandbabies; my mother's cousin; an unrelated family of five: parents and three high-school age children; another family of seven: parents and five adult children, two of whom have spouses; uh... who am I forgetting? Maybe some in-laws will be there. That's about 30 people -- what my aunt considers an intimate gathering.

I have mixed feelings. I'm very glad to be included. My own family never made a big deal about holidays, and unless we joined someone else's celebration, Thanksgiving was just the four of us, which always felt a little lonely to me. On the other hand, as a family member, I'm obliged to help with setup: chop vegetables, arrange platters, bring out the fancy china from storage, etc. And maybe help with cleanup afterward. It means I don't have many daylight hours to myself today. And tomorrow is a work day.
