the winter of life
Jan. 19th, 2003 01:16 pmCold. Cold cold cold cold cold. Friday morning we had a dusting of snow, which melted into ordinary round specks of water as soon as it touched anything. I suppose that will be the most snow we see, having met this area's quota for the season.
My mother has begun complaining about the cold in the last few winters; she talks of retiring to Florida, or Hawaii, or the Philippines. The cold didn't used to affect her so much. There was a time when she was never cold, unless the temperature was below freezing by several degrees.
Been hearing more about the ailments of senescence since I've been home. My grandfather, in the frozen north, has developed some kind of blood disorder. My neighbor across the street has arthritis that keeps her housebound. My oldest aunt's kidneys and eyes are starting to fail her, after years of inadequately managed diabetes.
