Nov. 11th, 2008 09:30 amThis morning I dreamed I had recently registered for a chemistry class all about electron orbits and VSEPR theory. I spoke with a few classmates and the teacher. Nobody could tell me why this class was required for my accounting degree, but they all agreed it was a very difficult class.
On Saturday evening,
aristeros and I went to dinner and a movie with another couple. We ended up watching "Eagle Eye," because by the time we got to the movie theater, all the other films had already been going for half an hour or longer, while that one was just starting. I don't particularly recommend it. It wasn't so bad that I wish for those two hours of my life back, but it was kind of stupid. The dinner and conversation were much better.
Going backward in time, I attended a dinner gathering on Thursday evening meant to introduce some local partners in CPA firms to accounting students. I learned a few things:
I also learned I've gotten too fat for most of the "business attire" outfits I used to wear to work on occasion. Fortunately, one suit still fits me.
On Saturday evening,
Going backward in time, I attended a dinner gathering on Thursday evening meant to introduce some local partners in CPA firms to accounting students. I learned a few things:
- An accounting degree does not provide you with all you need to know to be an accountant: that takes about two years of learning on the job. Therefore, accounting firms are anxious to retain new employees after investing two years of on-the-job training in them.
- Take the CPA exam as soon as possible, because it doesn't test the skills you use on the job, and the longer you wait before taking it, the more you'll forget from school.
- A job in public accounting gives a broader view of all the things you can do in the field than one in private accounting.
- Write down your questions, so when you finally get a chance to ask someone knowledgeable, you won't get distracted by the lengthy answer to the first question and forget to ask the rest.
- Take notes on the answers to your questions, so you won't arrive back at your desk and realize you've just forgotten what you were told mere minutes ago.
I also learned I've gotten too fat for most of the "business attire" outfits I used to wear to work on occasion. Fortunately, one suit still fits me.
