That way is more a matter of physical restraint than training, isn't it? 6 inches, wow.
I usually hold the leash at about 2 to 2.5 feet. If I give him the entire 6 feet slack, it drags on the ground between us and he often gets a foot tangled in it. Mungo isn't much of a puller unless he sees another dog.
