Year In Review
Dec. 22nd, 2003 01:09 pmI had a good weekend. Finished my Christmas shopping, did a tiny bit of housework (lots more is needed), saw "The Last Samurai" with Chris. We both liked the movie, although it was heavy-handed at times in making its point, annoying him more than me I think.
My family arrives in town today. :) I haven't seen my dad and my brother since May, and my mom since August.
1. What did you do in 2003 that you'd never done before?
Quit a job, rather than merely letting it end with the beginning of the school year. Live all on my own with no roommates.
2. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
They lasted for a month or two. I intend to make goals, not resolutions, just as I did last year.
3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
Yes: my cousin. I'd show cute baby pictures (she's four and a half months now!), but I have no webspace.
4. Did anyone close to you die?
Yes: my neighbor, Mrs. D, who was a sort of grandmotherly figure to me.
5. What countries did you visit?
Uh. The USA?
6. What would you like to have in 2004 that you lacked in 2003?
My bearings. I'm a little at loose ends now. A job that uses my brain more.
7. What date from 2003 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
Hmm... August 14, my baby cousin's birthday.
8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Moving out on my own, cross-country.
9. What was your biggest failure?
I don't see that I had a really big failure. However, I have been a bit slow with the career search.
10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Um, I cut my finger while chopping vegetables a couple weeks ago? I think that's a "no."
11. What was the best thing you bought?
Gee. Something I bought? I like my new couch from Ikea... but the daytrip to RenFest was fun.... Yeah, the home furnishings rank high, and I got a good CD -- "Revolucion de Amor" by ManĂ¡ (annoying Flash website) , but I think I'll have to go with the tickets to RenFest here.
12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
My wonderfully generous aunt & uncle, for taking me in for seven months and continuing to feed me, as well as my cousins for providing help in various ways.
13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
I don't think that's a good question in a public post, but in any case, it was nothing much.
14. Where did most of your money go?
My biggest spending areas were probably clothing, restaurant dinners, and now rent, but my money also gets saved.
15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Moving out on my own, and my baby cousin.
16. What song will always remind you of 2003?
Hrm. Probably the songs that my cousin plays in his car on the way to/from work.
17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
i. happier or sadder?
Happier.
ii. thinner or fatter?
Fatter. 's my uncle's cooking that's to blame, and a readier supply of sweets than at my parents' house.
iii. richer or poorer?
About the same, I think, money-wise, maybe a little richer. In terms of intangibles, also I think a little richer.
18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
Getting ready for my next step: researching what I want to do next with my life. Writing. Drawing.
19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Leafing through catalogs, finding ways to waste time, worrying about things that don't matter much.
20. How will you be spending Christmas?
With family, at the traditional family gathering.
22. Did you fall in love in 2003?
No, but I remained in love.
23. How many one-night stands?
None.
24. What was your favorite TV program?
Pre-move, maybe Scientific American Frontiers. Post-move, Queer Eye for the Straight Guy.
25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
I don't hate anybody, not even W.
26. What was the best book you read?
American Gods by Neil Gaiman.
27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
I like my klezmer, but I think that was a discovery from a year or two ago. I don't guess I had one this year.
28. What did you want and get?
A job at my new location. An apartment. Christmas is not over yet, and I think I'm going to get a couple things that I've been wanting, namely, a TV and a PS2.
29. What did you want and not get?
A new computer with cable modem. A long wool coat. More free time. A fuzzy pet.
30. What was your favorite film of this year?
I haven't yet seen LotR III, and I think I've forgotten movies that came out more than a couple months ago. Oh -- I liked "Bend It Like Beckham."
31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
Nothing in particular on my actual birthday, IIRC, but a few days previously my cousins took me out to a fancy restaurant, and on the adjoining weekend, my boyfriend and I went to a jazz concert and also went out to dinner. I am in my twenties.
32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Deciding and embarking on a career path, instead of treading water.
33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2003?
Comfy yet not sloppy, as ever. New aspect: I now have "career wear," that is, a couple of suits to wear to work when I feel like being dressy.
34. What kept you sane?
Talking with the cousin I saw the most and with my boyfriend.
35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
The actor who played the samurai leader's son, Nobutada, in "The Last Samurai." Though I don't think he's quite a celebrity.
36. What political issue stirred you the most?
Politics did not stir me. It seldom does. I would have to say environmental issues, such as the "Healthy Forests Initiative."
37. Who did you miss?
My brother. My parents. My friends. My boyfriend, before I moved. The people I like all live far away from each other. :(
38. Who was the best new person you met?
Hm. There's a girl at work who was in orientation with me; she's interesting, but I don't really have time to talk, as we're both busy and we're in different departments. Unfortunately, I did not really get to know anyone new this year.
39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2003.
I'm unable to identify one after thinking for five minutes. I'll have to ponder it longer.
40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year.
Ditto answer to question #39.
