the last day of winter
Mar. 19th, 2004 02:34 pmThe weather reporter said this morning that the snow was fluffy, and indeed it was. I'm not sure I've seen snow like this before -- but then, I haven't seen a great variety. This stuff reminded me of a down jacket busted open.
It was still coming down as I drove to work, flakes sticking together in tiny clumps for their journey to earth, where they melted within a second or two. To me, I guess snow looks heavier than it actually is. For all that it fills the air, it doesn't turn into much water on my windshield.
The snow has made crossing the bridge look a little eerie. I think it was yesterday that I couldn't see the buildings on the far side at all. I was just driving into a pearly whiteness, trusting that the other end would bring me to solid ground. Today I could make out faint rectangular shapes. Still, I was acutely aware of the many feet of air underneath me, and the cold river under that.
I wanted to do something tomorrow to celebrate the first day of spring, but it's looking like that will merely be spring cleaning. :p So hard to comprehend that the daylight hours are now going to exceed the darkness, even though it's still fairly cold.
