AP: Idaho girl becomes superhero for a day
Boise, Idaho - Most days, 6-year-old Aubrey Matthews spends her energy fighting a brain tumor growing behind her eyes. But the first-grader managed to foil crimes and chase an arch-nemesis through Boise on Friday, serving the city as the superhero "Star" with assistance from the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Idaho, The Idaho Statesman reported.

When she donned her blue and metallic superhero costume, Star took on the super-powers of X-ray vision, superhuman strength, speed and blowing power — and a mission: To capture the villain who had stolen a golden star from the Idaho Historical Museum.
[..snip..]

Before catching the bad guy, she rescued people from a "smoke"-filled building, saved a citizen from drowning in ParkCenter Pond, and vindicated ferrets at Zoo Boise who had been framed for stealing the golden star.

It was a busy day for Aubrey, a little girl with an incredible imagination whose biggest foe is the inoperable optic glioma tumor growing in the center of her brain. The tumor was diagnosed when Aubrey was 6 months old.
[..snip..]

Most kids making a wish through the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Idaho wish to go someplace, to meet someone or to have something special.

Aubrey's request — to "be" something — is the rarest kind of wish, said executive director Marcia Karakas. It's the first time in at least 10 years that a "be" wish has been received in the Idaho office, which serves the state's lower 35 counties.
[..snip..]

Aubrey came up with other superhero characters to help her fight crime — Lion Lady, Frog Lady, Dog Man, House Lifter, Sky Girl, Martian Manhunter and Tree Girl — all played by volunteers. She also helped design the costumes.
[..snip..]
I wonder what the previous "be" wish was? It's an interesting point, that most people dream of having things or doing things rather than being something.

That was a totally great story, even if I did read it first elsewhere. The other day I was feeling bad about disappearing from all my internet friends that were so important to me a while ago -- you know I still have a copy of the drawing of The Clearing you did like 6 years ago?

I heard from Tal that your guy joined the Army; I got his email address and sent him a note too. Oddly enough I did as well, and am currently deployed with 10th Mountain.

Anyways, hi again.

Pretty good, recently got back from a visit to the UK.

And yourself? What do they have you doing in the Army?

!!!
Did you and Steve hang out?
If so was it not the first time?

I am doing various communications related things. Radios, satcom, computers, etc. I managed to get outside the wire once - it was fun. Also: I've been punched in the face by a monkey (but it didn't really hurt).

Yep! That was the second time I'd gone to the UK specifically to visit Steve. We also had lunch with [livejournal.com profile] ngarewyrd, since he was over there at the same time.

That sounds like a cool job; one of my co-workers used to do something similar. Also, what species of monkey, and how did that happen? o..0

I'm unsure of her species, but she's pictured in the photo here (http://www.flickr.com/photos/impulseliving/106152444/).

The next day I was playing with her and she stole my flag patch. In the process of getting it back I left my chin open and she gave me a hard right. Or well, as hard as she could, it didn't actually hurt.

Are there photos of either visit to the uk? Or are those reserved for people who didn't disappear into the ether for x years?

I don't have much in the way of pictures, despite taking three cameras with me, both times. This last visit I had planned to go out and take art photos, but never got around to it. The one time I went into Liverpool city centre, I forgot to put film in the camera. There's always next time, though.

Are you still in Afghanistan?

Holy shamoly! I am shocked! Good to hear from you again! I didn't think you were the type to join up, but a year ago I didn't think he was either.

I actually lost (or have stored on Zip disk, which is almost the same) most of my old website material when I got a new computer, and recently recovered that Clearing sketch from the Internet wayback machine.

I might want to see that anyway. Well, the scar it would leave once healed, not the actual operation.
