The sound of spending
Jul. 2nd, 2006 04:46 pmYesterday I went with my relatives to a casino. It was run by Indians, and it had an Indian village theme: fake logs as beams holding up the building, fake pine trees inside, fake waterfalls with fake streams running through the floor -- I could smell the chlorine when I got right up close. There was an animatronic wolf on top of a pile of fake rocks. The effect was pretty, but all the fake stuff reminded me slightly of Epcot Center. I wondered what tribe members from two hundred years ago would think of the place.
The building was very large and loud. The ceiling must have been at least forty feet up, maybe more, so the space was echoey. As I walked toward the gambling area, I became aware that part of the noise was a constant, musical hum, as from an organ. At first I couldn't see where that sound was coming from. Then I realized that all the dings, beeps and little melodies from all the slot machines were tuned to the same key. The hum must have been the overtone created from the incessant dinging echoing in the large room, like how we used to create overtones in my high school choir.
Oh -- as for gambling, I played a slot machine just once, to see how it works. I lost $1. :) We only stayed there for three hours including having lunch; I'm not sure why. I guess my relatives were expecting a little more to do and got bored.
