Some weeks ago I was made aware of the nifty LJ community, [livejournal.com profile] find_a_book, wherein you can describe a book whose author/title you don't know and people will try to identify it. I haven't yet asked for help there, but I'm sure an occasion will come up eventually. What I'm thinking of tonight is a movie.

In my freshman year of college, not long after arriving at my new school, the girls on my floor settled down in the floor lounge with popcorn and a rented video. There wasn't much plot to this particular movie, but there was a lot of beautiful scenery. Two or three middle-aged English housewives, bored with their husbands and their lives, take a holiday together at an Italian villa they rent out for the occasion, along with one single young woman. Something about the vacation, maybe the locale, so changes their perspective that the ladies feel they are experiencing a life-altering revelation, and they send for their husbands to come join them. Meanwhile, the owner of the villa returns to his property, and he and the young woman fall in love. Romance, personal rediscovery and newfound happiness rule the day.

And that's about it. Lots of sunny blue skies, flower gardens, nice architecture; very peaceful and relaxing. For years I have wondered the name of this movie. It was in color, must have been made in the 1980s at the earliest, more likely the 1990s. Searching plot descriptions on IMDb is quite tedious. Too bad there isn't a "find_a_film" community to help me.

EDIT: I take it back -- I think I may have just found it!
...aaand Netflix doesn't seem to have it in their database. How disappointing; that would have been a good argument for me to sign up with them.

Haha oh man, if you hadn't found it I could have told you no problem. I love that movie so much. God it's gorgeous.

And now I have spent my entire Sunday morning reading the book online, when I had intended to go skating and then take care of laundry. Gah.
But it is pretty. :)

Oh and the reason you can't get it from netflix: It is not out on DVD.
