I smell smoke
Jan. 31st, 2007 11:01 pmThe older couple who were my downstairs neighbors moved to a different apartment a couple weeks ago. I've been wondering who would take their place. I opened the door to the shared hallway tonight and was just noticing the new doormat in front of the downstairs door, when my new neighbor stepped out and introduced himself.
"Louie" looks to be in his 30s and was wearing a wifebeater shirt. I suppose when you've been moving house all day and want to relax, it's understandable to wear an undershirt without a shirt over, but to greet people without a shirt is a bit offputting to bourgeois snobs like myself. I only thought about this afterward, though. What I was thinking about at the time was whether it was dangerous to answer honestly to his question if I live alone (I answered "yes," he's bound to find out before long), his response that he also lives alone, and his offer to "just call if I need anything" like milk or laundry detergent or whatever. I told him that was very kind of him, and I was very conscious of locking the deadbolt and the chain on my door after I got inside.
I also noticed a smoky odor when I passed Louie's door, and again later tonight while I was showering I thought I smelled smoke. That alone might make me look for another place to live. We'll see if it keeps up and how severe it is.
EDIT half an hour later: Yes, I can definitely smell cigarette smoke in the bathroom. The fans must vent to the same pipe. Argh.
