I rarely have anything to say on politics because I know I'm so uninformed. But...
I was thinking that if Bush the Younger were running for another term in 2008, the government response to Katrina might be the factor that tips the balance in favor of the Democrats.

I did a quick search for 2004 election maps, and the first result is this useful page. If you scroll down to where they color the country by county instead of state, there's an intriguing streak of blue going up the Mississippi river. Ya think that'll expand this fall?

Of course, Bush won't be up for reelection, and the Republican candidate will doubtless try to distance himself from the snafu. I can't tell from the headlines whether local officials are getting good or bad press (with the exception of Ray Nagin, whom I had never heard of before last week), but whichever, they will probably have a lot of bearing on midterm elections next year.
