Activities of late
May. 27th, 2008 09:44 amThe Chinese lessons and the Spanish lessons I was taking have finished for the semester. Chinese will start again in the fall; Spanish may resume when my classmate returns from her vacation some weeks from now. Meanwhile, I've been getting slightly more involved with the other spouses from Chris' work.
Last weekend we decided to go ahead and buy a PS3 as we'd been planning to do. This was in part so we could host a few friends for supper and video games, which we did this past Friday evening. Supper was simple, serve-yourself pasta with homemade meatsauce and some salad, but it was effectively our first dinner party, and it seemed to go well enough. Next time I'll try to have more things for the girls to do while the guys take over the game console.
On Saturday we drove out to Carlsbad Caverns. It was an all-day trip. We arrived at about lunch time and had sandwiches from their snack bar (note to self: next time, bring your own) before walking the self-guided tour route. The cave is magnificent. It is very large, with many passages, nooks, and little chambers branching off, and fantastically shaped rock formations. We drove 20 miles to the town and had a quick supper, then returned to watch the bats exit the cave system. That was a little anticlimactic; Chris and I were expecting something of a cloud of bats pouring out, and what we saw was more of a trickle -- there were a lot, but they didn't blot out the sky like we were thinking, or even our view of the cave wall behind them. Apparently there are more bats later in the year.
Yesterday we bummed around the house and relaxed. We got out long enough to watch the fourth Indiana Jones movie. Chris was quite disappointed in it. I thought it was all right; I hadn't expected it to live up to the earlier ones anyway. They borrowed a lot from the previous movies. I didn't like the re-use of plot devices, but I was happy to catch the references.
I think today will mostly be spent lounging around, too.
