serenissima: woman's face with glasses (real life)

Here it is September again. It's just about one week short of a year since I moved to this place. The weather is starting to cool down to something approaching room temperature. I went to school today and walked around outside without breaking a sweat.

My love and I had a nice long Labor Day weekend. This semester I always have Fridays off from school, because the business school does not hold classes on Fridays for whatever reason, so while he was at work last Friday, I did a bit of shopping, washed dishes, and loafed around. I went ahead and got a second piercing in each earlobe. The last time I tried that, everything was fine for three weeks and then I got a horrible skin infection in one piercing, so I'm carefully monitoring the condition of the wounds.

We took a road trip on Saturday, together with a friend of his from work. In the morning we headed off to what I'd thought was a "chili festival" but turned out to be a "chile festival," featuring lots of chile peppers but no chili that we could find! There were chile quesadillas, chile burritos, roasted corn, and the usual fair fare like funnel cakes and turkey legs. There were a whole lot of cookbooks being sold. They had some little carnival rides and contests, but I don't think these would have entertained anyone over the age of ten. Overall, the event was a disappointment. We did buy a string of peppers to hang on the wall.

After an hour or two of browsing around, we moved on to the second festival of the day, a wine festival. This turned out to be more interesting. The cost of the entrance fee included a small wine glass and unlimited tastings -- each a couple of tablespoonsful -- from the various wineries that were sponsoring the event. I don't drink much of any sort of alcohol; I tried maybe four or five varieties of sweet whites, probably amounting to one glass all together. There was a free hour-long lecture on the basics of how wine is made, how to select a wine appropriate to a particular food, and how to store wine, with a taste-test comparison of the effects of spicy salsa on red and white: supposedly the heavy red tasted awful with the salsa, while the white held up better. Personally, I thought the red tasted equally gross both before and after a mouthful of salsa.

Anyway, I had a nice time browsing around all the food and craft vendors at the show. Besides some more fair food (I felt compelled to get a skewer of chocolate-covered strawberries), there were booths selling goat cheese products, salsa-type products, nuts and nut brittles, jewelry of silver and/or glass, cheese boards made from recycled wine bottles, hand-painted wine glasses, a few artwork vendors. Also there were some local bands providing live music. We ended up not buying anything besides food we ate on the spot, but we enjoyed the festival, and we reached home before 8 PM.

[livejournal.com profile] aristeros had off from work on Monday and Tuesday, and I had those days off from school myself. I had some homework to finish on Sunday, but otherwise we basically spent three days lounging on the couch playing video games. It's been relaxing.
