dirty dishes

The one thing my roommates do that really gets on my nerves is leaving their dirty dishes around in the kitchen sink and on the counter. When I'm through eating, I scrape my plate and maybe rinse it off a little and put my dishes directly into the dishwasher. Unless I've forgotten a pot or pan, which is unusual, the only time I'll leave a dirty dish sitting out is if I'm letting it soak.
On my own, it might take me more than a week to dirty enough dishes to fill the dishwasher. With three people, it only takes a few days... but the dishwasher doesn't get full, because the dirty dishes are all sitting around. I refuse to take care of my roommates' dishes for them, but on the other hand it's a waste of power and water to run the dishwasher when it's only half full.
So here's my idea. From now on I will wash my dishes by hand in the sink. This won't save water, because I'll have to let the water run and not simply fill the sink, because there will doubtless be other people's dishes in the sink. But I'm sick of the situation as it stands.
