Broken shoes
May. 14th, 2011 08:54 amThis is too old to be news already, but it's a little bit funny. My mother had some shoes she never wore — sandals with leather uppers and platforms made of what seemed to be hardened foamed rubber. I liked them, so I brought them home with me at the end of my visit.
Two weeks ago I wore them for the first time, to church. As I made my way to the pew, I realized that one foot felt a little off balance. I looked down and noticed that a small piece had come off of the left heel. I had my son with me, and he was being pretty fussy (he needed a nap). After a while, he was so noisy that I got up and brought him to the back of the church. As I walked around with him, I noticed that my shoes were leaving behind me a little trail of black rubber crumbs. I decided to go home, partly to put my child to bed but also out of embarrassment at the mess I was making.
I stopped for gasoline on my way home. While I stood by my car pumping gasoline, the entire heel of my right shoe came off as a big chunk of foamed rubber. When I got out of the car into my garage, another huge chunk of rubber fell off from under the ball of the left foot. I took pictures of the disintegrated shoes before throwing them in the trash.
