I've decided to sing in my high school's annual performance of the Christmas portion of Handel's Messiah. When I showed up to rehearsal last week, I was pleasantly surprised to find that I remember the songs very well, and the high notes aren't too uncomfortable for me, even though I haven't sung in public since last May. Hard to comprehend that Christmas is next week -- it sort of snuck up on me. I've purchased my gift for my parents but not wrapped it, picked out something for my boyfriend but not purchased it yet, and I don't know what I'm getting my brother. We haven't even set up our tree yet, a task which was assigned to us kids. I did manage to put up a couple strings of lights in the living room window last weekend.

My parents and I saw the new Harry Potter movie two Sundays ago. I enjoyed it. But I couldn't help thinking, as I did when I read the books, that if Harry & co. would go to their teachers with their findings instead of pursuing their investigations all on their own, it would save them time and trouble. Harry doesn't really have parental figures in his life, so it's understandable that he is not accustomed to turning to authorities for help, but his friends should be.

Another thing that's been on my mind lately is how a certain senator's moment of thoughtlessness has maimed his political career. It's interesting how one public faux pas, made in a matter of seconds, is likely to remove someone from the position of Senate majority leader.
