Temperatures were in the teens Fahrenheit over the weekend (-9 or -10 Celsius), for daytime highs. After that, the freezing temps -- or should I say melting? -- today seem warm, despite the half inch of snow that fell overnight.

For a long time, I've been wanting to write some fictional pieces about college students, but I don't know what would drive the plot. At the very least, I'm thinking of jotting down some amusing or interesting memories as starting material. So: number one, Sparky.

I took Differential Equations my first semester freshman year, and I had kind of a tough time with it. One night I gave up on the homework, which was due the following day, at perhaps 1 AM; I was too sleepy to stay up and complete it. Around 4:30 AM, the fire alarm sounded, so I joined the flow of students out of the dormitory and into the yard. Once we were given the all clear to go inside again, I figured I might as well finish the assignment, since I was at that point wide awake. I turned it in bright and early and went back to sleep. That afternoon, I found out the cause of the alarm: one of my fellow freshman had gotten sick-drunk for the first time in his life and threw up onto his computer, which made sparks and, I suppose, started a small electrical fire. Thereafter, he was occasionally known as Sparky, and I have him to thank for the completion of my math assignment that day.
